Help Renovate Niantic Park, Oak Bluffs
Since 2003, the Vineyard Streetball Classic, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, has taken place each year on July 4 Weekend at Niantic Park in Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard. This year it will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2010.
During the annual tournament, students age 10 to 18 from across the northeast showcase their athletic talents in an environment of positive recreational competition. Each team of three to five players battles through a series of double-elimination rounds with the top teams in each division receiving trophies at the end of the day.
The director, staff, and volunteers of the Vineyard Streetball Classic tournament all have lifelong ties to the island community, having grown up at the Niantic Park courts and summer league programs. After expenses have been met, a portion of the proceeds from the tournament benefits the Oak Bluffs Parks Department summer basketball programs.
Our Mission of the Streetball Classic is to improve recreational park basketball play areas, promote exercise & nutrition, and combat childhood obesity through educational awareness of the benefits of an active lifestyle among children ages 10 to 18.
We aim to involve entire families and communities in our program by staging annual basketball tournaments in recreational park setting across the country. We encourage youth to participate by playing basketball at our tournaments and to learn about the importance of good health & exercise.This year we have opened the event up to local venders to bring even more fun and education to the day. The Streetball Classic initiates community partnerships with non-for profit organizations to assist in the education and promotion of exercise and an active healthy lifestyle among our youth and the community.
We believe healthy habits should be learned early in life. Childhood obesity is a growing concern. Exposure to athletic competition promotes an active lifestyle among children and a functional park environment is essential to teaching exercise and active lifestyles. Families and communities are strengthened through partnerships to promote health and wellness among children.
Our long term goal is to expand the program to other recreational park locations on the east coast. We have a Streetball Classic scheduled to take place in the Atlanta area in the spring of 2011.
Last year, Julius Erving - Dr. J, made a surprise appearance and thrilled the crowd! Even signed a couple autographs. You never know who may show up this year!

Streetball Classic is to bring together today’s youth to involve them in the
